I Didn’t Overlook Myself

Dear Coach,
The season is over.
And if I’m being honest, the outcome wasn’t what I expected.
I thought I’d see the field more.
I thought I’d have more opportunities.
Instead, I spent most of the season watching from the bench.
A few innings here.
A few opportunities there.
The rest of the time, I felt more like a spectator than a player.
But here’s the thing.
Sitting on the bench didn’t break me.
Watching others play didn’t break me.
What was harder was feeling invisible.
Showing up to practice every day.
Putting in the work.
Supporting my teammates.
Cheering for them when things went well.
And still wondering if you saw me at all.
From where I sat, it seemed like there were nine players you trusted and everyone else was simply waiting for an opportunity that never came.
There were moments when self-doubt tried to creep in.
Moments when I wondered if I was good enough.
Moments when I questioned whether all the work was worth it.
Maybe you’ve seen athletes quit before.
Maybe you’ve watched players walk away from the game. Maybe some people believe that adversity weeds out the weak.
But I have news for you.
You’re not getting rid of me that easily.
I’m still here.
I’m still showing up.
I’m still working.
I’m still learning.
And most importantly, I’m still believing.
Because my story isn’t defined by one season.
It’s not defined by one coach.
It’s not defined by one lineup card.
My story is defined by how I respond when things don’t go my way.
The truth is, maybe you did see me.
Maybe you saw exactly who I was.
Maybe you simply made different decisions.
That’s your role as a coach.
And this is my role as an athlete.
To keep showing up.
To stay ready.
To remain flexible.
To continue growing.
To keep moving forward regardless of the circumstances.
One season doesn’t determine a career.
One setback doesn’t determine a future.
And one person’s opinion doesn’t determine my worth.
My story isn’t over.
Not because someone else says so.
Because I haven’t finished writing it yet.
Sincerely,
The Show Up Athlete
