The work you don’t see!

Dear Coach,

I came to practice early.

Not because anyone asked me to.

Because I wanted to get better.

While others were talking, I was getting my work in.

When practice ended, I helped clean the field.

After most people had left, I stayed behind to finish putting things away.

No one handed me a trophy.

No one announced my name.

No one applauded.

And that’s okay.

Because I wasn’t doing those things to be noticed.

I was doing them because that’s the standard I’ve set for myself.

One lesson sports has taught me is this:

Character is built in the moments no one is keeping score.

The extra rep.

The extra minute.

The willingness to do the job that nobody wants to do.

Those moments don’t always show up on a stat sheet, but they shape the kind of teammate and person you become.

Coach, I know you can’t see everything.

No coach can.

But over time, patterns become visible.

Work ethic becomes visible.

Leadership becomes visible.

Integrity becomes visible.

Actions have a way of speaking louder than words.

Whether someone is working because they’re being watched or because they genuinely care eventually becomes clear.

That’s why I’ll keep doing the little things.

I’ll arrive early.

I’ll stay late.

I’ll take care of the field.

I’ll take care of my teammates.

Because those choices aren’t about getting recognition.

They’re about becoming the kind of person I want to be.

One day, someone will notice.

But even if they don’t, I’ll know I stayed true to my values.

Sincerely,

The Show Up Athlete
